Minecraft YouTuber Dream has rapidly risen in the creator ladder and is now one of the fastest-growing YouTube channels of 2020, and the second overall creator of the year, according to the platform. The unassuming green avatar with a knack for discovering "Minecraft's" cavern-filled secrets has managed to garner over 16 million users in less than two years. What exactly is it that makes Dream so special and popular when there have been thousands of content creators who have created worlds with Minecraft's characteristic blocks?
Who is Dream?
Dream's identity and personal life are still unknown. The YouTuber, who prefers to keep his identity secret, chose not to reveal his identity. His online avatar is a simple drawing with an emerald-green background. The style of the figure is iconic, and easily recognizable to the common "Minecraft" user.
Mysticat, a YouTuber, says that Dream's branding is "unprofessional but that doesn't mean it's not good." Dream employs a Microsoft Paint drawn character that's fun and appealing to children, which is Minecraft's core audience."
Dream created his YouTube channel in 2014, however it's unclear if his videos were regularly uploaded until July 2019. In his first video, Dream "triggers" viewers by playing the game as bad as he can. He does this by putting blocks on top, killing sheep for their wool and eating rotten flesh and even placing blocks on the top.
Dream began to upload content more frequently after his first upload. Felix Kjellberg, known online as the hugely popular PewDiePie, had been playing "Minecraft" for his massive audience of more than 100 million followers at the time he uploaded his first post. Dream managed to find the way to modify Kjellberg's "world seed," meaning, the randomly generated world his "Minecraft" game had created, using techniques that he learned from forums. Minecraft servers In the first two days the video would pull in 200k views, which led him to make three more which would reach more than two million views in total a little under two weeks. The star of his career was born when Dream had 54,000 subscribers at the time of the end of July.
Dream's channel will continue to increase the number of millions and thousands subscribers over the next few months. However, the second major breakthrough was in November 2019. After uploading several videos that capitalized on the trend format "___ but ___ changes each time,"" Dream struck diamond. His video titled "Minecraft However, Items Drops Are Random and Multiplied ..." became a viral hit with 32 million views, and giving him 600,000 new subscribers.
Dream would upload regularly over the next year, steadily gaining hundreds and thousands of subscribers per month, and millions of views. His "Minecraft Speedrunner vs." series, in which Dream would decide to play the game while certain NPCs (also known as non-player characters), chased after him, or objectives needed to be accomplished was a huge hit. Dream also began collaborating with GeorgeNotFound, who was a friend and a future participant on Dream's server for roleplaying which he founded in the month of May of 2020.
Dream has been accused of cheating in Minecraft
Dream's channel was approaching its subscriber-growth apex, gaining 2.6 million subscribers in August 2020, and was becoming the face of the game. He had uploaded a speedrun of the 1.14 version of Minecraft in March of 2020, and 1.15 in June, so when version 1.16 version launched later that year, he needed to go with it. He was pleased with the position he had reached on the leaderboard , and finished his race in fifth position.
On December 11 , 2020, moderator of the official speedrun forums Geosquare uploaded an YouTube video entitled "Did Dream Conceive His Speedruns - Official Moderator Analysis." Geosquare and his colleagues Minecraft moderators had examined the livestreams and concluded that Dream had recorded events that were statistically unlikely to have happened without the assistance of cheaters or mods. The moderators analyzed the 29-page document and concluded that Dream was one in 1.75 trillion likely to have found the necessary items needed to complete the game.
Dream has denied any wrongdoing or cheating in numerous Twitter threads and videos. Dream posted his video on the 23rd of December discussing the claims. He shared a study he'd conducted with Photoexcitation. It concluded that there was a 1 out of 100 million chance of winning.
The speedrunning mods issued a five-page document that dismissed Dream's research. Dream responded in an official tweet, stating that "this drama has been a stressful time for the majority of the Minecraft community and a large portion of that is probably due to my initial reaction to the drama, so I am fully responsible for that."
Dream was the victim of Doxxing, harassment, and even doxxing
Dream fans were able to find his home using a photo of his kitchen uploaded to his second account on January 1, 2021. They also posted the information, which is known as doxxing.
In a Twitlonger on January 7th, Dream addressed the incident as well as his ex-girlfriend who he believes is spreading false reports about him. Dream denied that what he said were her claims, saying that he "doesn't take a lot of interest in YouTube" and that his friends who appear in his videos don't get the "revenue" taken from his channel.
How has Dream has mastered the YouTube algorithm?
His knowledge of YouTube's algorithm is responsible for Dream's huge growth in the years 2019 and 2020.
He puts his keywords in the right places and makes the most of trends and creates thumbnails that fans want to click on. Similar to the genius of Jimmy Donaldson, the highly-popular Mr. Dream has mastered, Beast has also learned to be successful on YouTube the same way as Beast.
